Activities

What activities are included?

We offer one free activity for each night that you stay. Examples include orienteering, minibeast safari and bushcraft. There may be some additional activities available at an extra charge. To view the activities on offer click on each locations page and scroll to the bottom.

How much participation is needed from parents in activities?

Parents or guardians must accompany children on all activities and we always encourage participation from everyone. But it is up to you how involved you want to get.

What clothes do I need to bring?

Some activities can be muddy so it's worth bringing clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We also recommend brining waterproofs and warm layers as activities do take place outdoors. We can lend you waterproof coats and wellies if required

What is on offer for the families to do in the evenings?

There are some activities offered in the evening for example night walks and campfire. However, there is an adult lounge including a bar and children’s game room at most locations.

What happens if an activity is cancelled?

Occasionally we may have to cancel an activity. If this happens, we will run a sutiable alternative activity or offer you a partial refund.

 

Accommodation and Food

What are the rooms like?

We want your stay to be as comfortable as possible. Our residential centres offer a range of room sizes and layouts from single and twin up to larger dormitories. Some rooms are en suite and others have shower and toilet facilities close by. Please contact us if you want to discuss your room requirements.

Will I be sharing a room with another family?

Each family will get their own room(s).

Are bed linen and towels provided?

All centres provide bed linen, but you will need to bring your own towels unless told otherwise in your welcome email.

When are meal times?

Breakfast is normally between 8am and 9am. During breakfast there will be food available to make a packed lunch. The evening meal is served around 6pm. Meal service timings may vary slightly at some centres and you’ll be able to check this when you arrive.

What’s the food like?

You will be served healthy and hearty meals, normally two choices including a vegetarian option. We strive to maintain our high standards at all times. If you have any special food requirements please let us know before you arrive at the centre. Don’t forget to bring a lunch container and a flask/water bottle for your packed lunch.

A typical day's menu:

A cooked breakfast selection with a choice of cereals and toast
A self-prepared packed lunch (made at breakfast time)
An evening meal with a meat and vegetarian option e.g. lasagne, curry or pie, a desert and choice of fruit
Tea and coffee is always available.

Do you have Wifi?

Our centres have free WiFi available in communal areas, and in some bedroom areas.

Are cots available or do I need to bring my own?

Box Hill and Start Bay have limited cots available to borrow, but you will need to request this when you book. No other centres have cots available to borrow. Baby baths and high chairs are not provided at any of our centres, so please bring your own.

Do you have disabled access/facilities?

Some of our locations have accommodation and facilities suitable for wheelchair access: Scottish Islands, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, South Wales, Dale Fort and Box Hill. Some activities may not be fully accessible, so it’s worth contacting the location to check this.

General

What sorts of families come on a RFH?

We welcome all types of families including single parent families, extended family groups and grandparent holidaying with their grandchildren.

Are babies/toddlers welcome? 

Babies and toddlers are welcome on Real Family Holidays. We don't charge for under three (age at the time of arriving on your holiday). The activities available may be aimed at older children. There may be some noise in the evening from children playing.

Can we bring our pet?

Unfortunately, we do not have facilities for pets and cannot allow them to come on Real Family Holidays. However, we can make special arrangements to accommodate assistance dogs.

Do I have to have children to come on Real Family Holidays?

Real Family Holidays are designed for families with children.  We offer them at an affordable price to allow parents and guardians to introduce their children to the natural world.  The activities are aimed at children and young people. 

If you are visiting with extended family we welcome all types of family (see above), however Real Family Holidays are not available for couples/groups of adults.

How much do I have to pay to secure my booking?

If you book 8 weeks in advance of your booking you will pay £50 per person as a deposit to secure your holiday. If you book within 8 weeks of your holiday you will be required to pay the total amount straight away. You can read the full booking terms and conditions on the FSC Customer Informaiton page here

What time can I arrive from?

Your booking confirmation email will let you know check in and check out times for your holiday. At most centres rooms become available during the afternoon and check out is any time between 9:00 – 9:30am. You are however welcome to arrive earlier or leave later, if you wish to participate in an activity or explore the area.
